Home / Founder
Microsoft on the bio. Placeholder in the policy. Sudo in the store.
The public story is a gamer who shipped code at Microsoft and rebuilt community software from the first line. The public record is a YouTube instructor who incorporated in 2022, raised $9 million in 2025, and spent February 2026 explaining a privacy policy as a misunderstanding.
Jesse Dietrichson, Los Angeles. Farmingdale State College, BS in Computer Programming and Information Systems. Xamarin University instructor. Udemy. Pluralsight author. YouTube educator with tens of thousands of subscribers. Senior software engineer at Microsoft, March 2016 to July 2022. Founder of Root from June 2022, overlapping the last month of the Microsoft job on some bios.
May 2022, on his own channel: a 12-minute video, “Building the future of communication!” The working name in that era was “roots.” The comparison target, even then, was Discord. The company would take years of closed work and a seed round before a public client.
X bio, 2026: “Founder @rootappofficial previously @microsoft @xamarinhq.” The Microsoft line does a lot of work in a category full of weekend Discord clones. It does not make the terms nicer.
The team, as sold
Adrian Stevens
COO and DevRel author. Writes the developer-program posts. Reports include a Social Engagement Manager. Konvoy named him next to Jesse in the investment announcement. Developer Terms went out under the company, 22 July 2026, with Monetization still Reserved.
Fii
Senior Community Manager, from Guilded. Hired 12 November 2025, a month before Roblox finished killing Guilded. Jesse: she will be the point of contact in the two Root-operated public communities, “keeping the vibe positive.” Root then posted in r/guilded offering a new home.
The round
GamesBeat, 17 June 2025: $9 million seed. Headline, Konvoy, Day One, Untamed. Jack “CouRage” Dunlop on the quote sheet. Crunchyroll founder Kun Gao in the stack. Clark Valberg too. Gaming VCs buying a Discord competitor is not a conspiracy. It is the incentive.
Ask Root is a controlled interview with himself
June 2026, Episode 1. Why closed source? Competitors will steal the edge. Why no browser? Electron is slow, native is virtue, a web client is intended. Why no self-host? They wanted it easy for non-technical people; they are thinking deeply. Why sell data? They do not, never have, it was a rumor about placeholders.
That last answer is the one that matters. The archived policy is dated, public, and specific. A founder who will look into a camera and call a live legal document a placeholder will look into a camera and call the next one a philosophy. You do not need a secret recording. You need the Wayback Machine and a calendar.
Reddit, r/RootAppOfficial and r/BannedFromDiscord, February 2026: closed source, VC, TOS, encryption. u/HackTheDev, who runs DCTS, said the quiet version: investor-backed, same issues as Discord. u/RainOfPain125: “closed source slop… it will become Discord all over again.” Those comments are not evidence of a crime. They are the category noticing the rhyme.
If you would not hand a community to a company whose CEO, after a week of screenshots, told you the contract was a placeholder, you already understand the product.
